Bespoke Roof Access Platform for Rail
Network Rail in Derby commissioned AV Access to design & build an access gantry to allow engineers at RVEL to allow roof access to both engines and rolling stock.
Railway Vehicle Engineering Limited specialises in engineering work on railway traction and rolling stock from its 86,000sq ft facility in Derby. The company provides essential maintenance, inspection, repair and refurbishment services for many of the leading manufacturers and rail operators including Bombardier, Eurostar and of course, Network Rail.
The access platform replaces a generic mobile scaffold system, which was erected each time it needed to be used. Brendan Rice from Network Rail comments “This bespoke roof access platform has not only freed up the mobile scaffold to be used elsewhere but has also improved the efficiency and engineer safety in the facility.”
Being in use since 2013, the platform is used each week for a wide variety of maintenance tasks, and has recently been fitted with an additional piece of equipment to simulate an overhead line for calibration purposes. The highly stable platform features weather protection, anti-slip stair treads and a lockable gate entry to prevent unauthorised access.
David Tilsley-Curtis, Managing Director of AV Access said ‘Our design team have a great deal of experience in robust access platforms and equipment in the rail industry and this platform will give years of excellent service’.
