Advanced bogie handling crane for Northern Rail
AV Birch’s AV Access Equipment Division has supplied a 10 tonne 360° slewing jib crane with enhanced digital safety features to Northern Rail for the loading and unloading of bogies.
The crane has been installed at Northern Rail’s Newton Heath depot in Manchester to facilitate the operation of a new C4 train bogie servicing contract. The AV Access Equipment Division of AV Birch, based in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, designed, built and installed the advanced crane within three months of winning the contract.
AV Birch Director David Tilsley-Curtis said: “It was important for Northern Rail that the crane was compatible with its own depot protection system. We were able to build in the technology required, future-proofing the crane. “The crane’s digital operating system identifies each operator and logs the actions of each user. It can also be linked with the depot’s safe operating system, so it can only be slewed across a track if it is safe to do so. “The crane is remote-controlled, including a remote-controlled slew, maximising the efficiency of all lifting operations.”
Simon Marsland Northern Rail’s C4 Team Leader at Newton Heath, said: “AV Birch’s crane is an excellent new asset for the depot. We’re impressed with its performance. “The bogies we will be lifting, initially, will be up to six tonnes in weight. The extra capacity this crane provides means we will be able to handle a range of other lifting requirements, including heavier bogie sets, in the future.” AV Birch Access Equipment has been working with clients to develop and manufacture bespoke solutions for more than 30 years.
